However, Australia pulled one back through an Enzo Jeremias Fernandez own-goal to ensure the final minutes were nervy.

The Australians were off their seats after Aziz Behichbeat about four Argentines, but his shot was deflected by Lisandro Martinez for a corner kick. It was a Messi-esque move by the left-back.

Argentina could have killed the game, but substitute, Lautaro Martinez lost two chances before Ryan saved with his leg from his shot to keep his side in the game.

Australia could have levelled and forced the game into extra-time, but Emiliano Martinez saved Garang Kuol’s last-minute strike after a good move by his team.

Argentina will face the Netherlands, who beat USA 3-1 earlier today, in the quarter-final, while the Socceroos of Australia head back to their country.
